This is Maurice hearing Lucia's recounting of a conversation with Eva about Stefan, right? And the "he" at the end, the one who would have pushed Eva about Oxford and doing her best, would that be Shandlin?

Yes to both. And Shandlin would have pushed her for sure. I am fond of Eva, but she does *need* a kick up the backside every now and then.
