Does being one of her ladies imply a certain subordinate role? Or would they be equals? They sound as if they're going to be friends.

Slightly subordinate, but nearly equal (as Firiel is marrying the heir to the throne, and the ladies are the daughters (and wives in some cases) of the nobles), so they are expected to be her friends in time. :)
