Day 29 (Team July)

I'm about to go to bed and as there isn't a post for today yet, I thought I'd better put one up. So here's today's prompt for your writing updates and for any extracts, thoughts, or comments you might have.

Heirs and Graces

Phase 3 -- July's writing:

Let's try another new target for the final three days. I may write more later, but this is where I got to so far. Consolata and Edward have been debating what to do next:

"Rupert needs a father. One who will present, not one who just sends him money."

"I agree." That was what he'd been working towards for the past three years. "It just might take a little more time than I'd anticipated."

"How long?"

The front door opened and then closed.

"Let's discuss that later. Isn't it time I said hello to my son?"

Consolata got to her feet, and rather grudgingly ushered in the new arrivals.

"Hello, Rupert." Standing, Edward forced down an unaccountable wave of panic. Rupert had no way of remembering his father from before, but he had no reason to reject him either.

Good luck with that, I know it will be excellent!

I had been wondering how much time had passed since Consolata moved to North America. So Rupert is about three and a half now?

I like Edward's thinking, very balanced.

Congratulations, and good luck with the rest.

Thanks. Rupert's just coming up to three, but Edward is counting from the point he decided this was his child. I may need to make that clearer when I come to the editing phase.

Writing, cutting out, writing a bit more, deciding it's in the wrong direction or for later. And so it goes. Tiny snippet -

“Mycroft hasn’t explored this already?”

“He’s a social scientist. He found how it could be used interesting. I wanted to know what it was, what were its origins, its mechanisms.”

Drat, I forgot to post? Sorry about that. I thought I had made it last night in advance, but apparently, I hadn't. Well, since I'm here already...

Torchwood excerpt:

Jack always loved watching the nanogenes in action. Loved as the tiny machines swarmed around a damaged human body like a cloud of sunlit dust particles, entered it and then left it again, after they’d repaired the damage, dutifully returning to their stasis tube. They were like small sparks, tamed to his hand. Like a healing spell from some fairy tale taking physical form.

An interesting distinction. What kind of social scientist is Mycroft anyway?

Good luck with the scene!

[identity profile] stevie-carroll.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I also like the distinction there.

Good to hear Edward wants to do the right thing.

Editing is tough work. Keep going!

What lovely description. Very poetic.

Third Draft

[identity profile] ideealisme.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
After a cursory attempt to tidy up and submit a few stories and even a half-intention of writing a new one, I bit the bullet and realised nothing further would be done till I finished White Feathers.

I have decided that the second draft ended up way too long to make one novel and have chosen the point of the split. I have some trepidations about how much I can cut but I am going to make a start. There will be profuse and regular use of the Delete key in the next few weeks.

I realise that Pico is winding down but this is as much a declaration of intent as anything else.

Oh, the nanogenes!

[identity profile] stevie-carroll.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck with that.

He's trying, he really is.

Oh, but that's such a painful thing to do! Lately, I've been struggling with something similar concerning an old, abandoned piece of Start Trek-TNG fic, and it's really like pulling teeth.

Congratulations on the progress and good luck!

[identity profile] ideealisme.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Just 5 pages in now (the routine will be: read 10,000 words, then clean them up) and I already have the urge to bang my head repeatedly off the wall. Clunky, clunky exposition!

[identity profile] ideealisme.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Looking at the prose quality of this scene, I'll need it!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, indeedly.

[identity profile] jenn-calaelen.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like Edward needs to start actually consulting Consolata about the plans he is making.

[identity profile] jenn-calaelen.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Very Sherlock in the way he makes the distinctions there!
