I must say I quite disagree with Gilli, :) but I like how you present his dilemma.

Of course eventually the conflict between his vocation and the princess is going to intensify, I suspect, and he won't answer as confidently.

In canon, Gilli is conceived as a charcter very frustrated by the fact that he cannot use his magic at will. So yeah, he might react this way. Especially as he has no emotions invested into the Princess at all and vice versa.
