No, it's all right! I did that for my original fiction: drawing maps and figuring out the history of entire peoples and stuff like that. It's a bit more tricky with fanfic, as most of such stuff is already given and fanon is so determined by big name authors that the majority of readers won't accept/be interested in any other version.
