So, my fellow writers, welcome to the 2022 March session! To get things properly started, perhaps you'd like to tell the rest of us what are your plans for this particular pico?

Me, I'll be trying to get written as much as possible for Kindred Spirits, a vampire crossover story that only needs a couple of chapters to be finished. I don't really hope to actually finish it now, but a chapter or two ought to be doable.

May the magic be with us all!

So, folks, obviously we won't be having a June session - I guess everyone is too stressed out from the entire situation planetwide - but is anyone interested in a July session? It doesn't look as if we'd get anywhere here, so I'm willing to put up the daily posts, assuming there's anyone who'd like to participate. I for my part certainly do miss the discussions with you, even if it's only mutual moaning about the lack of productivity. ;)
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Okay, folks, what about the summer session. And yes, I know it's winter in Down Under, but I live in Europe, so it's summer for me, even if it looks like a fairly depressing autumn at the moment...

Anyway, the question is: June or July this year? Because last summer session proved that we simply don't have the energy to pull through two months, and the July part was pretty much dead most of the time.

So let's do a poll:

[Poll #2092777]

I'm willing to put up the daily posts again, regardless of the month the majority chooses.
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Dear fellow writers (and strugglers),

A poll in which (sadly) very few people participated last year resulted in the decision that the 3 yearly pico sessions should be spread more evenly throughout the year, so the official sessions would be March, July and November.

However, some of you mentioned that they'd like to have a June session as well, partly because July doesn't fit in everybody's timetable.

So, now that the end of May is ante portas, is anybody indeed interested in having a cosy little June session, just for the heck of it? I'd be willing and capable of putting up the daily posts, if there are at least three people who'd like to participate.
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Should we do it? Let's discuss it while we're still more or less here.
I for my part am very much for an evenly spread pico network: March, July and November. That way everyone can find a season that fits their schedule and writing vibes. What does everyone else think?

[Poll #2075537]
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
I can put up the daily posts in June and/or the last three weeks of July. However, I'll most likely be unavailable in the first week of July.

So, who is up to the new session? I'd love to see you folks again.
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Hi folks,
I was thinking: would you be interested in having one pick-up post around the end of each month? The next real pico session won't be coming until June, if we keep up the ways this comm has been working in recent years, so what about one monthly post, just to keep tab on each other's writing activities?

Opinions?

Dear All

[livejournal.com profile] espresso_addict and I have been bandying about the idea of having weekly post-Pico check-ins to help folks who are still finishing up stories or rushing towards a mid/late December deadline and so on. Same format as Pico with updates on writing progress and an excerpt, if possible.

I could put up the weekly post on 7 and 14 December and I believe, [livejournal.com profile] espresso_addict can do 21 December. After that we could have a break and see if anyone was interested in carrying on in January.

Is anyone else interested in this idea? If yes, please comment below with thoughts, suggestions, stream of consciousness...

(Yes, it might be called Pico-withdrawal.)

ETA: OK. December is a go! See you all on the 7th! :-D

As it's the 31st of October where I am, thought I'd post a heads-up about pico. It starts tomorrow!

If you didn't post your goals in the Twirly post, why not post them here?

Anyone got links for resources like word-count graphs and the like?
[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Well, folks, since there haven't been any new voters for the last two days, I've now officially closed the poll. Looking at the results, it seems that there are 6 people who checked June exclusively, 6 people who checked July and 8 people who said they could do both.

So, therefore I'm abusing the power gifted upon me by [livejournal.com profile] altariel the Great and decide that we'll follow her excellent advice and do the mid-year pico in two teams: Team June and Team July. (And, as someone has suggested, I insert a proper Bwahaha! here. *g*)

In any case, please sign up to the team of your choice. As promised, I'll do the daily posts for Team June and most of July, and my sincerest thanks for the volunteers who offered to take over between July 8-14.

Expect the kick-off post for Team June next Wednesday.

All right, folks, since [livejournal.com profile] altariel the Generous raised me in power, here is your chance to vote for the month in which the mid-year pico should take place. Let's your voices be heard. :)

[Poll #1841411]

I hope I've done this rightly - we'll see as soon as it posts.

Would anyone apart from me be interested in running a mid-year round of Picowrimo this year? June or even July? I'd be willing to moderate, assuming all that's involved is putting up the daily posts for participants to comment on.

ETA: The consensus seems to be falling on running in July.
ETA2: Just to clarify, this is proposing an additional round, NOT any kind of replacement for the usual November round.

A day and a half left to go!

I'm wondering if any of you use rewards -- tangible or otherwise -- as motivation for writing, and (if so) what.

Some people I know promise themselves a reward after completing a large project, like a vacation day, a book they've wanted for a long time, or something else substantial.

For me rewards seem to work best on a micro-level, i.e. when I tell myself "write for 15 minutes, and then you can read badfic/check email/other cat-vaccuuming occupation." If I complete my Yuletide first draft by tomorrow evening, I may buy myself a froofy coffee-drink Tuesday morning, but that will be about it.

How about you -- do you plan to give yourself a reward if you meet your [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo goals?

Dear Pico'ers,

This post is to ask what you want of Pico.

As you'll have noticed, I didn't post a prompt for April.

To be honest, I've begun to feel a bit self-conscious about posting these prompts when only a couple of people are contributing.  Had Pico run its course, and all the prompts were doing was making people feel guilty, when they've already enough on their plate?

If Pico has run its course, let's celebrate what Pico has achieved - many thousands of words that might not otherwise have been written - and then hit the "pause" button.  Altariel can then "resume" Pico at some other time, perhaps in November.

If you don't want Pico to pause, please submit a post and let me know.

If we do pause, I'll probably start up a private email list with a couple of friends - where we'll just send periodic emails to each other, describing progress, and offering encouragement.  If you'd be interested in such a private email list, post here that you're interested, and I'll arrange a way for you to join it without advertising my or your email address to the sundry spambots of the Websphere.

Hello again everyone.

Altariel has just passed the baton over to me for Pico, and I may as well get started at once.

I hope you're all recovered from your November Pico exertions and aren't completely snowed over with pre-Christmas busy-ness.

Firstly ... with 3 voting for a new community and 12 for staying in this one, I can't see the vote changing by midnight tonight. So, if it's okay with everyone, I'm assuming we're staying.

Second ... right after this post, I'll create a "Projects for December" thread. If folk use that to post descriptions of their new projects/targets starting in December, we'll have a single place to refer to for a reminder of what others are working on.

The projects can, of course, be anything writing related, any genre and of any length.

Thirdly ... I'm planning to do weekly prompts on Friday for updates. If I forget, do create it for me ;)

Once there are 25 posts for one week, I intend to create a prompt for the next day. Hopefully that'll mean threads won't grow over 50 and get compacted ... And hopefully the community will be so busy, we'll have to do this often :)

Now all I have to do is decide what my December target will be ...
[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
There has been a general "Aye!" to the question "Shall we keep this community going in some way?" A summary of what the community would be for is behind the cut - thank you to all who offered input (and if you think I've missed something glaringly obvious, please let me know).

All we need to do now is figure out in what form we carry on - whether to carry on here, or to reconvene at a parallel place.

A quick summary of the pros and cons of all this:
  • Starting a parallel community would keep [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo as a distinctive space: the place where we do these special, one-off 'pushes' with daily updates (perhaps six-monthly). Running [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo between times might mean it loses its unique quality.

  • Staying here means this community will stay alive and won't get split up (it also means fewer communities to manage). People who don't want to participate in between times can change their membership settings so that they don't have to read every post.

Over to you. (I'm away for the weekend and will keep the poll open till Monday.)
