Two and a half pages done today, which is a new record. That deserves a longer snippet.

Excerpt:

At the same time as Uhura, Tigh and Lamia left the birthing caves, the sensor net placed around the camp of the landing party went on proximity alert.

“What the hell…” Trish Davidson muttered under her breath and stepped out onto the veranda with a coffee cup in her hand, to see what was going on.

To her shocked surprise she spotted several dozen ebony black Dairu who had already surrounded their camp and were now approaching with alarming speed, moving with the deadly uniformity only insects – or insectoid species – were capable of.

“Awww, shucks, we seem to have outlived our welcome by the bugs,” she concluded with her typical gallows’ humour.

Oh dear, I am NOT sure where this came from, but the first line - and the aliens - popped into my head and I couldn't resist. Definitely a plot bunny I may use, for the minute, I've scribbled it in the rough to just get it down and saved...

The problem is not, actually, that there are aliens at the bottom of my garden.

The problem is not that the aliens at the bottom of my garden look uncannily like something - okay, somethings - dredged up out of one of Lovecraft's lesser flights of fancy, Unnameable and Unthinkable Elder Gods all writhing slimy flesh, mucoid eyes and at least a million bloodstained teeth... that had been caught in the rain and shrunk to the size of decaying but possibly sentient cabbages with tentacles. I may not find sentient cabbages appealing at the best of times, but even I can outrun them and their tiny appendages.

The problem is not even that the aliens at the bottom of my garden are noisy and the din they are making sounds like a hideous mix of grating, old metallic screeches, nasally and squelchingly moist whines and the odd ear-rending drone of an undead bagpipe, all at once.

No, the problem is that my precious Tibbycat ate three of the little ones - presumably baby Unnameable and Unthinkable Elder Gods - before I could lock her in the house and she clearly wants to get out and at the rest of them. I mean, I'm really not sure whether to worry about what they will do to her digestion (and if nothing good, her litter tray), try and work out how to explain to the vet exactly what caused her fur to turn that shade of putrefying green and her eyes bulge and go black, or wonder if sentient cabbages really do taste that good, if only to cats - or of not only to cats....

Thanks! It just sort of... came to me. Which might be a worry, but is fun.

Not sure if I'll get a full story out of it, but maybe more bits, and it's good practice.

This is amazing... in a slightly disturbing way. The cat might have just saved the Earth from an alien invasion, but she certainly paid the price, the poor thing. Or do the aliens procreate this way?

Tibby only ate three of the little ones, there are plenty others. I admit, I'm swithering between a Ghastly and Warning Fate for Tibby... or my POV person ending up tasting the cabbagapoids herself...

I know, I'm evil :) It may just be a freeing up exercise.

A better day - ~550 words :) All very factual and dull, though.

I'm nearly done with this, really, but I find it fiddly to do on my tablet because I keep wanting to look things up and the tablet is reluctant to switch between windows, so the finishing touches might have to wait until I can have some time on a real computer.

On his return, Cook was finally made a Post Captain, and also a member of the Royal Society - not for his geographical or cartographical achievements, but presenting a paper 'On the Health of Seamen', dealing with his efforts to prevent scurvy with sauerkraut and 'marmalade of carrots'.
