220 more words and I have a first draft for my exchange fic.
Don't know what I'll work on next, maybe some works in progress. No matter what, it will be nice to be working on something not-secret fic, which I can talk about here more openly.
I published Lucia's War e-book in June this year, and the paperback in August. I did it myself but got it into several bookshops as well as Amazon. It's also getting some great feedback on Goodreads and Amazon. Sales are modest, but this time around it's just me, so am just entering it into as many prizes as possible and hopefully that will boost its profile.
During the summer and autumn I wrote nothing but a short story which I have submitted off to places. It's about being sued for defamation based on my personal experience of...being sued for defamation. Basically it's a "screw you" against Ireland's ridiculous libel laws.
Now I'm starting the second draft of a crime novel which I hope I can get traditionally published, simply because it's less work and expense! It's about a closeted trans cop and her Chinese colleague who have to unravel who murdered a beautiful, charismatic Anglo-Irish eco-activist. I might check in here from time to time :)
I wrote a measly, listless half-page, just to push the story a bit forward. I seem to have run out of steam a bit, but it's not surprising. I've written all the stuff I had a detailed idea about; I do have an outline of the rest, but have to work through a somewhat tricky part next. This is the part where I haven't quite figured out the details yet, and my mind seems to be a tad numb at the moment.
I typed up about two pages from the previous chapter, though, so I call it a success.
Excerpt: Owen was mildly surprised when his scout team #1 returned from Torchwood House with Dr. Arnold in tow.
“Jonesy left instructions,” Trevor handed him a data stick. “We are to share information about this mission with Sal… I mean, Doctor Arnold – but only with her.”
“Ianto and I agreed to keep Mr. Palmer out of the loop as far as we can,” Dr. Arnold added. “The others are all right, but it’s safer if they aren’t told, either.”
“He’s an unpleasant old geezer,” Owen agreed; then his eyes narrowed in suspicion. “So, you and Teaboy are on first-name basis now?”
Dr. Arnold shrugged. “He offered; said that you aren’t that formal at Three.”
“Except him,” Trevor grinned. “Once an archivist, always an archivist. Even if he used to slave as Three’s janitor and barista in-between.”
I've done nothing (as I'm sure is obvious) since Tuesday--too nervous, too much time spent checking for news, too many anxious tets and phone calls etc. Feel a lot better today, so opened up google docs to finally finish my ghost story. And I found that maybe ghosts and goblins don't fare all that well when you're in a happy frame of mind! But as we know, happiness is fleeting and I'll return to this anon ;) Instead I jotted some notes for a holiday story that's been rattling around as a vague idea for a while.
Hi again! I'm so glad to hear you're writing and that you did finish Lucia's story.
The crime story sounds fantastic, what intriguing characters you come up with. I hope you do check in now and then, I definitely want to hear more about this book.
Yup, all the stories for my Christmas challenge are crossover (MFU, Sapphire & Steel, NCIS, Dr. Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Despicable Me, Are You Being Served and The Addams Family).
You have been getting so much writing, crafting and RL tasks done this week, no wonder you had a slow day after all that productivity. And hey, with these two pages typed that is still some very nice work.
