220 more words and I have a first draft for my exchange fic.
Don't know what I'll work on next, maybe some works in progress. No matter what, it will be nice to be working on something not-secret fic, which I can talk about here more openly.
I published Lucia's War e-book in June this year, and the paperback in August. I did it myself but got it into several bookshops as well as Amazon. It's also getting some great feedback on Goodreads and Amazon. Sales are modest, but this time around it's just me, so am just entering it into as many prizes as possible and hopefully that will boost its profile.
During the summer and autumn I wrote nothing but a short story which I have submitted off to places. It's about being sued for defamation based on my personal experience of...being sued for defamation. Basically it's a "screw you" against Ireland's ridiculous libel laws.
Now I'm starting the second draft of a crime novel which I hope I can get traditionally published, simply because it's less work and expense! It's about a closeted trans cop and her Chinese colleague who have to unravel who murdered a beautiful, charismatic Anglo-Irish eco-activist. I might check in here from time to time :)
Hi again! I'm so glad to hear you're writing and that you did finish Lucia's story.
The crime story sounds fantastic, what intriguing characters you come up with. I hope you do check in now and then, I definitely want to hear more about this book.
I wrote a measly, listless half-page, just to push the story a bit forward. I seem to have run out of steam a bit, but it's not surprising. I've written all the stuff I had a detailed idea about; I do have an outline of the rest, but have to work through a somewhat tricky part next. This is the part where I haven't quite figured out the details yet, and my mind seems to be a tad numb at the moment.
I typed up about two pages from the previous chapter, though, so I call it a success.
Excerpt: Owen was mildly surprised when his scout team #1 returned from Torchwood House with Dr. Arnold in tow.
“Jonesy left instructions,” Trevor handed him a data stick. “We are to share information about this mission with Sal… I mean, Doctor Arnold – but only with her.”
“Ianto and I agreed to keep Mr. Palmer out of the loop as far as we can,” Dr. Arnold added. “The others are all right, but it’s safer if they aren’t told, either.”
“He’s an unpleasant old geezer,” Owen agreed; then his eyes narrowed in suspicion. “So, you and Teaboy are on first-name basis now?”
Dr. Arnold shrugged. “He offered; said that you aren’t that formal at Three.”
“Except him,” Trevor grinned. “Once an archivist, always an archivist. Even if he used to slave as Three’s janitor and barista in-between.”
I've done nothing (as I'm sure is obvious) since Tuesday--too nervous, too much time spent checking for news, too many anxious tets and phone calls etc. Feel a lot better today, so opened up google docs to finally finish my ghost story. And I found that maybe ghosts and goblins don't fare all that well when you're in a happy frame of mind! But as we know, happiness is fleeting and I'll return to this anon ;) Instead I jotted some notes for a holiday story that's been rattling around as a vague idea for a while.
I meant to really settle to this today and get on with it properly, but instead I knitted and went for a walk in the rain and made a cake and... generally didn't. And I've got out of order, too, but never mind - so has the story!
having reached the ridge at Masuri on the edge of the Himalayas, where Everest had his home and base in the later stages of the survey, it jumps first to the author’s visit to the crumbling house, and then back to 1819
(I'm trying to catch up with myself, at least, but I'm still not doing very well at being conversational.)
I have been very slack this first week - not only was I distracted by news domestic and international and RL, someone gave me Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies and I spent waaaaayyyy too much time distracting myself even further by reading them ALL.
My writing unit with uni starts this week so I will have to buckle down...
Waaahhh, I fell off the pico wagon for two days. Yesterday we had company, real company! A bubble of two couples. Spent the day cleaning and preparing, and they left at 11 pm! Today we went on a road trip, and wound up going for a hike in a state forest. We didn't get back until just a while ago.
So I spent a while compiling a Weekly Reader post, and now it's time for dinner. I will try my best to plonk away at my story tonight for a while, but I'm tired. And I took a spill on some rocks, I'm a little sore, that's all, but it's enough to use as a flimsy excuse to just snuggle up and read after dinner LOL I'm pathetic. Yup.

“Well, that’s the rub, inn’t? They don’t like my bloke and he doesn’t do well with my mum. So, my choice is to be with them or him.”
Sapphire nodded sadly. She wished she’d know hers. Suddenly her hands were clasped and she was abruptly hugged. She stiffened briefly, then relax.
“I’m sorry.” Donna released her. “You just looked so sad I couldn’t resist.”
“I’m glad you couldn’t. I never knew my parents. Not really. This is sometimes… hard.”
“None of that, now.” Donna brushed a tear from Sapphire’s face off with her mitten. “This is a time for hope and happiness.”
“Donna Noble, you are such an incredible lady.”
“Me? Naw, nothing special about me.”
