I find there is no sense of reading 'a bit' -- my unit of book consumption is unity! Reading good fiction is far from wasted time in terms of writing, though -- I suspect it's one of the main ways we learn new tricks.

Still good I suspect! I got into the habit of writing with the online OED open in a side window when I was storming 'Study in Emerald' novella last Yuletide, and I've found it quite a useful trick. Though one does have to be careful not to go off on random word trails...
