Here is the place to tell us about your daily success (or the lack of it)!
May the magic be with us all!

I meant to do some of my WIP this afternoon. But instead I wrote lists to start getting ready for Christmas, and then read something that set me onto a different tack altogether.

Mention of foods from childhood on a friend's journal set me off reminiscing about the everyday foods in our household in the 1960s and 70s and I have just posted a journal entry of around 1,500 words :) It is here (https://curiouswombat.livejournal.com/658159.html) if anyone is interested.

Here is tiny snippet of it -

If Richard went crabbing we sometimes had dressed crab with salad, if he went fishing off the pier we might have mackerel. If he helped out on the Niels John (a local fishing boat) in his summer holidays we would have herring; fried in oatmeal, or potted in vinegar and pickling spice. Everything came with bread and butter in my memory! Left over fish would turn up as fish cakes.

A very nice lot of writing! And I enjoyed your menories of the everyday food and meals you grew up with. Thank you for that link.

Oooh yum, that sounds nice.

Also might make a good jumping off point for a story :)

Still working on the same two stories. We left early this morning for a Wal Mart run so I only managed about 500 words...

Illya smiled at the offer. “That is very kind and I am through singing for the evening. Thank you.”

The drinks arrived and both men sat quietly for a time until Giles cleared his throat. “I heard your group perform last night. You were very good.”

“Again, my thanks.”

“I didn’t know there were any carols in your country.”

“Well, technically, they cast a dark eye upon them, but, in recent times and in an attempt to lighten their image, they are falling back to the old ways.”

“The old ways?”

“We use the word kolyadki now as the word for Christmas Eve, but it used to refer to pagan songs. The church forbid them, but like so many other countries, learned to embrace them as a way of reaching the people. Groups of young children would go around on Christmas Eve, singing at various houses. The homeowners would give them gifts as it was thought their songs would bring luck to the house.”

That's a good amount of words! Good for you. Nice snippet. Sounds like Illya's getting in the holiday spirit:)

Oh that's interesting! I do like bits of social history, and you've woven it in well.

I have two excuses for doing nothing in particular today - I'm on holiday (the first time I've had a whole week off at once this year...), and the Great Arc book got wet in the rain (my new bag is not as waterproof as the old one) and is recuperating under the mattress, so I can't write about it. So just another little bit of local hill wandering - 141 words.

Further up again it was wheel tracks through the heather - and then it wasn't, and then I was into a short burnt patch, and then I wasn't - I kept thinking I was going to pick up a main path somewhere, but it took quite a while, and a lot of wading through heather, before I finally came out on a good track again just at the edge of the flat summit area

I hope you're enjoying your holiday! A whole week off, that's so great! I like the hill wandering:)

We spent two hours meandering around a little lake and a trail system yesterday in a nature preserve/wetlands restoration area. Very nice weather, sunny and cold.

I worked on a variety of writing this morning for an hour and a half. The most important one is my WIP, and I made some more progress on that scene I've been tweaking. The one I thought I was finished with:) But I had some notes to get out, so I didn't have time to move on to the revisions in the next scene. So that's my goal for tomorrow - to get back to revising the next scene.

Brainstorming here... I'm not so sure about whether to do the draft for my workshop piece about the Cemetery Incident, because this morning I had a thought about the Doll Without A Face saga, and Not Throwing Out Mum's Teddy, and for this very early piece I'm thinking they might be gentler and therefore easier to get the detail and description in (they both can be described in innnnnnteresting ways...) There doesn't have to be much story after all, just a vignette (which I'm better at than plotty stories)

On the other hand, I can combine things, so if I did The Cemetery Incident, there were a couple of visits to other, older, more creepily evocative graveyards that might be fun to throw in. Only caveat is that I can't include a stone angel watching me because everyone will think I got it from Dr Who although I've seen plenty of them in my visits to old cemeteries...

I might scribble the start of each and see where I end up.

Brainstorming is so important. I often have the whole story written in my head before sitting down. The end result might or might not resemble it, but I've usually at least worked out the kinks.

Good luck!

I was mostly doing fill-ins to go between story beats in an exchange fic today, but somehow they added up to another ~1k! With luck, I'll finish the draft tomorrow!
