Another 500 words today, after a busy afternoon of paperwork and administrivia. Edward's arranged for transport to collect him, Roo and Quinn, but Christophe is planning to get a lift back to his hotel in Linda's car before the horsebox turns up:

"In that case..." Edward considered his words carefully, and decided to try a different approach. "How's Roo? I'm afraid his mother's news rather took me by surprise, and I didn't want to say anything that would influence his decision either way."

"He's good, I think." Christophe glanced over to the fireside. "He seemed very excited by that package you asked me to give him."

"How would you feel about spending more time with us – with both of us, if Roo decides to stay with me rather than move to South America with his mother?"

"I'd like to." Christophe fished out his tobacco tin and cigarette papers. "But there are things I need to do before I can settle down. It might take me a year. It might take two, or maybe a lot longer. Growing up, I always resented Da for not letting us know when he'd be turning up or how long he'd be going away for the next time. And Katja resented me for the hours I used to put in, even when I was managing to get home most nights."

"Katja?" 'Kate' in several Northern European languages, Edward seemed to remember. He carefully avoided the question of what had caused Christophe to work unsociable hours.

Another day of good progress! So much is happening! Edward's practically proposing.

What a great term! Possibly, I've admired it before, but it deserves more.

Thanks for the encouragement. Edward wants stability for Rupert as well as for himself -- or at least the possibility of it at some point in the future -- and that's really what Christophe wants, barring this big personal quest he's determined to finish first (even though he still won't tell anyone what it is).
