So, I had a really good day today. Almost finished translating the current chapter of "The Sins of the Mothers" - of course, the fact that I've managed to get through the dreary description parts and finally landed at the dialogue helped. Dialogue is in German, and translating from German to English is a helluva lot easier than from Hungarian to English. Nothing of the newly translated stuff has been typed up yet, so the snippet is from the parts I translated a few days earlier.
Excerpt:
While they were talking, the wagon passed through a habitat area. The dun-coloured buildings (the hives as Lieutenant Brent had called them), were circular complexes made up of lumpy individual parts that – save for the hue of the same colour – were completely uniform, from the placing of the doors up to the height of the windows. Cheap mass accommodations were easily recognizable everywhere in the known Galaxy, due to their mind-numbing similarity, Dr. Mulhall noticed absent-mindedly, wondering if the living units were similarly monotonous in the inside or if local custom allowed the inhabitants to modify them according to their own taste – assuming that personal taste played any role in such a strictly regulated society.
Nothing like a good day of writing/translating :) Great job!
Small note: The dun-coloured buildings (the hives as Lieutenant Brent had called them), were circular complexes made up of lumpy individual parts that – save for the hue of the same colour – were completely uniform,
the "save for...." is confusing (unless you're referring back to a description before this?) "Save for" would mean the hue is an exception to the uniformity, but the color you're referring to seems to be the "dun-color" which is uniform.
Congrats on the good day! All that translating, wow. It's hard enough to write the story in the first place. Then, to face the translation to English... great work, there!
Difficult to count words today, as I was trying to tidy up half-written blog posts - somewhere around 670, and three posted (I'm just pretending I wrote them in October like I should have done - I can get on with some November ones now!)
Knitting has passed the 25% mark.
For the occasion they were running little shows which claimed to be reenactments of the kind of case which Scott would have heard - although the one I went to, called The Lady Varnishes, was mostly an excuse to squeeze in as many puns as possible (including the ancient 'flair for it'!).
Hmm, that sounds like something we would have done back in the 60's when we were more bent on having fun with theatre as opposed to making money at it.
Well so far I have not really gt things going at all - I wrote prayer notes on Saturday, and a short post yesterday. I think I will go and write another journal post!
One hour today working on one of the Day 1 exercises from my 90 Day Novel book. I learned that the actual writing of the draft begins on Day 29. Between now and then there's going to be mountains of daily writing about all sorts of things related to the novel. Day 1 is "Imagining the World of the Story". I wonder how the hell I'll be organizing all the stuff that I'll have written by Day 29.
